Hair by Sam McKnight – Somerset House
Master hair stylist Sam McKnight’s remarkable 40-year career is being showcased in a major exhibition, “Hair By Sam McKnight” which opened this month at London’s Somerset House.
An integral part of the fashion industry, Sam has been instrumental in helping to develop the images of Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Princess Diana amongst countless others. One of the first session stylists to have carved out a career solely within the fashion industry, Sam has worked on hundreds of fashion editorial shoots, advertising campaigns and catwalk shows. He has shot over 100 covers for British Vogue alone and worked with top international fashion designers including Chanel and Vivienne Westwood, for whom he has been a long-term and exclusive collaborator.
The exhibition unveils the creative process behind the craft of hair styling within fashion and explores the relationships between McKnight and key long term collaborators such as photographers Nick Knight and Patrick Demarchelier, models including Kate Moss, Stella Tennant and Christy Turlington, stylist Lucinda Chambers and designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Looking at hair from a new perspective and the role of the session stylist within fashion, the exhibition includes some of the most iconic images in popular culture, tracing different movements and hairstyles from nostalgic to androgynous, romantic to sexy, red to platinum and catalogues the transformative nature of hair within the image.
Showcasing pieces from Sam’s extensive archives, the exhibits include photography, catwalk, magazines, behind the scenes footage, private photographs and full outfit looks as well as commissioned wigs and hairpieces.
Coinciding with the exhibition, Sam has published a book of the same name with Rizzoli Books, which is available now.
